Alphies a Good Bet

ARCADIA, Calif. (Mar. 6, 2010) -- Alphies Bet rallied four-wide into the stretch and pulled clear to win Saturdays $150,000 Grade III Sham Stakes for 3-year-olds at Santa Anita.

Alphies Bet is by Tribal Rule, out of the Candis Gold mare Miss Alphie, was bred by Teresa Williams, is owned by Williams and Peter Johnson and is trained by Alexis Barba.

"Im not sure what were going to do with this horse yet (for his next race)," said Barba. Were going to discuss it and then were going to let you know after we figure it out."

He has two wins in five starts, earnings of $141,320 and was coming off a Jan. 15 maiden win. He ran the 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.72 and won by 2 lengths at odds of 8-1.

"Alexis used to work for (the late) Eddie Gregson and they had a horse back then named Candis Gold," said jockey Alex Solis. "I told her this horse reminds me a lot of him; hes big, strong and hell run any distance. To be honest, I try not to think too far ahead. I just pray to God he stays healthy."
