ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 29, 2011) – Odds-on favorite Starlight Magic moved powerfully on the turn and pulled away to an impressive win in Saturday’s $100,000 Robert H. Walter California Cup Juvenile Fillies, presented by Angels Radio AM 830, for 2-year-old Cal-breds or Cal-sireds fillies at Santa Anita.
Starlight Magic is by Marino Marini, out of the General Meeting mare Star’s Millennium, was bred by John and Diane Fradkin, is owned by Cory Wagner, trained by Mark Glatt and was ridden by Rafael Bejarano in her first race around two turns. It was the second consecutive race on the card won by the Fradkins, who also bred maiden winner Platinum Mine, a half brother to champions California Flag and Cambiocorsa.
The $75,000 Barretts purchase has two wins in four starts and earnings of $96,780. Willa B Awesome was second and Raesunbrideledfaith third in the field of six.
“Seventy five thousand is a lot, but if you get a Cal-bred (Maiden Special Weight) winner, you’re looking at $50,000 plus (including the maiden bonus) and it makes more sense to spend more for them,” said Glatt. “I liked the way she worked and I liked her physically and it looked like she would run early.”
Starlight Magic ran the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.47 and won by 1 ¾ lengths at odds of 3-5.
“I was pretty confident she would go long, but until they two-turn you don’t know for sure, even if they train and act like it” said Glatt. “She’s always been real kind and push-button and that means a lot. Rafael got her in a reasonable pace and I think she was just the best filly.”
