INGLEWOOD, Calif. (Oct. 30, 2010) – Ultra Blend hold off defending champ Lady Railrider in a stretch duel to win Saturday’s $100,000 TOC/CTT California Cup Matron Stakes for fillies and mares at Oak Tree at Hollywood Park.
Ultra Blend is a 4-year-old filly by Richly Blended, out of the Desert Classic mare Ankha, was bred by BnD Chase Thoroughbreds and Elven Adams, is owned by Nels Erickson, trained by Steve Sherman and ridden by Joel Rosario.
“If you know this filly, she’s got a heard this big,” said Art Sherman. “If you look at her form, she’s right there every time she runs. She just lays the body down. She gets beat sometimes, but she wins sometimes too.
She’s just one of those fillies you’ve got to love as a trainer.”
The multiple stakes winner has six wins in 16 starts, earnings of $317,246 and was coming off a third in a Sept. 23 allowance. She ran the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.06 at odds of 2-1 and won by a half length over Lady Railrider, with Warren’s Jitterbug third in the field of seven.
“When I asked her to run, she had a really nice kick,” said Rosario. “She’s a little filly but she always tries hard.”
