INGLEWOOD, Calif. (Apr. 28, 2012) – Unusual Heatwave, a half-brother of 2010 Snow Chief Stakes winner Alphie’s Bet, went from last to first to overtake Stoney Fleece in deep stretch and win Saturday’s $300,000 Snow Chief Stakes for California-bred 3-year-olds on the Gold Rush XIII card at Betfair Hollywood Park.
Unusual Heatwave is by Unusual Heat, out of the Candi’s Gold mare Miss Alphie, was bred by Montecito Stables, is owned by Johnson, Johnson and McWilliams, is trained by Alexis Barba and was ridden by Rafael Bejarano.
He has two wins in nine starts, earnings of $265,262 and was coming off a fourth in the Mar. 23 Pasadena Stakes.
Unusual Heatwave, the 5-2 second choice, ran the 1 1/8 miles in 1:51.63 and won by a half length. Stoney Fleece was second and Dylan Donnelly third.
