INGLEWOOD, Calif. (Oct. 30, 2010) – Favored Slammer Time nailed Joy Boy at the wire to win Saturday’s $75,000 Bob Benoit California Cup Juvenile Stakes, the finale on the card at Oak Tree at Hollywood Park.
Slammer Time is by Grand Slam, out of the In Excess mare Excessively Wicked, was bred by Vessels Stallion Farm, is owned by Alto Racing, trained by Gary Mandella and was ridden by Rafael Bejarano, who took the late double after winning the Cal Cup Classic aboard Soul Candy.
“He was being really good today,” said Bejarano. “The last time he ran, he was a little rank at the beginning. I think this horse is going to improve a lot. He had run only three times before today and he was really professional this time. He’s going to be a really good horse.”
Slammer Time was coming off a maiden win Oct. 11 in his third start and has earnings of $83,152. He ran the 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.63 as the 9-5 favorite and won by a head over Joy Boy, with Woodmans Luck third in the field of nine.
“He’s a gutsy horse,” said Mandella. “Rafael said he got to (Joy Boy) and was acting like he wanted to pull up a bit, so that’s hopefully a sign that there’s more in the tank than his two margins of victories (a head and a nose) would indicate. Hopefully we’ll get him over that a little and maybe find even a couple of extra lengths.”
