Amazombie Mows Them Down

DEL MAR, Calif. (July 29, 2012) – California-bred Eclipse Award winner Amazombie unleashed a powerful stretch run to reel in pacesetters Comma to the Top and The Factor to score an impressive victory in Sunday’s $300,000 Grade I Bing Crosby Handicap at Del Mar.

Amazombie is by Northern Afleet, out of the In Excess mare Wilshe Amaze, was bred by Gregg Anderson, is owned by Thomas Sanford and Bill Spawr and is trained by Spawr.

“He really just cruised,” said winning jockey Mike Smith. “Bill did a great job to get him maybe even better than last year. My hat’s off to him and the crew.”

Spawr said he will stick with the same program this year as last – the Ancient Title, then the Breeders Cup Sprint.

“We feel better this year than last year,” said Spawr. “Like Mike said, he feels stronger. He’s bigger, thicker.”

He has 12 wins in 27 starts, earnings of $1,905,378 and was coming off a second in the May 5 Churchill Downs Stakes. He was third in this race last year.

Amazombie ran the six furlongs in 1:08.65 and won by 1 ¼ lengths as the 9-5 second choice.

Favored The Factor was second and Capital Account was third in the field of five.
