San Luis Rey Fire Heroes Honored

By Bloodhorse.com BONSALL, Calif. (Nov. 1, 2018) — The old adage goes: “Hard times don’t make heroes. It is during the hard times when the hero within us is revealed.” The fire at the San Luis Rey Training Center in December brought out the hero in many of the staff and barn workers, as they attempted to save as many horses as they could under chaotic conditions. As a collective group they were honored Nov. 1 at Churchill Downs during the Race Track Chaplaincy of America White Horse Awards. Traditionally the White Horse Award goes to an individual or group who has performed a heroic act on behalf of human or horse, but this year was different. The well-attended event, held for the sixteenth time, took place in the Triple Crown Room of the Jockey Club Suites. While Hall of Fame rider Mike Smith was the keynote speaker, the backstretch workers of San Luis Rey were the true honorees. “We had the most nominations we’ve had in a while,” said... ...

Dogwood’s ‘Cot’ Campbell Passes at 91

By Bloodhorse.com AIKEN, S.C. (Oct. 28, 2018) — W. Cothran “Cot” Campbell, whose Dogwood Stable provided a successful model for making Thoroughbred ownership more attainable and inclusive, died Oct. 27 at his home in Aiken, S.C., according to longtime Dogwood vice president Jack Sadler. He was 91. Born Sept. 27, 1927, in New Orleans, Campbell began syndicating racehorses in Georgia in 1969 and created Dogwood Stable as an innovative partnership venture shortly after. Rarely without his jaunty fedora and wry sense of humor, he introduced countless newcomers to the thrills of horse racing, as he pioneered the concept of shared risk and reward—a strategy employed by many who enjoy success at the sport’s upper echelons today. In 1971, Dogwood campaigned Alcibiades Stakes winner Mrs. Cornwallis. The 2-year-old filly thrust the concept of racehorse partnership into the limelight, and Campbell was soon able to abandon his successful advertising agency in Atlanta and New York, going into the horse business full-time. Along with his wife, Anne, he moved the operation to Aiken in 1986,... ...

This past spring a $600,000 son of Uncle Mo  topped the Barretts Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds at Del Mar. Bargains have regularly come out of the October sale, such as California-bred Spiced Perfection, a $6,500 yearling in 2016. Spiced Perfection sold again for $50,000 at the 2017 Barretts March Selected 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale and is a multiple stakes winner with earnings of $385,405.
