Big Win for Big Macher

DEL MAR, Calif. (July 27, 2014) – California-bred Big Macher held off odds-on favorite Goldencents to win Sunday’s $300,000 Grade I Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar. The Bing Crosby Stakes is part of the Breeders’ Cup’s “Win and You’re In” series, so all B.C. entry fees for Big Macher will be paid.

Big Macher is by Beau Genius, out of the Kris S mare Insight, was bred by Ballena Vista Farm, is owned by Tom Mansor and Tachycardia Stables and is trained by Richard Baltas.

“This is my first Grade I. It’s my dream … my dream,” said Baltas. “The horse has been nothing but spectacular, getting better and better. He had a little setback (quarter crack) after his last race that really wasn’t much. Tyler had more confidence in the horse than I did. You can’t teach heart to a horse, he either has it or he doesn’t. You just do the best you can do and hope the horse has the will to win. This horse does. ”

Big Macher has five wins in 11 starts, earnings of $496,428 and was coming off a win in the Apr. 12 Potrero Grande. He was claimed out of his first start at Del Mar for $20,000 on July 17, 2013. In nine starts since, he has won five races and $496,428.

“I have so much confidence in this horse,” said jockey Tyler Baze. “He’s all racehorse with a huge, huge heart. I get on him in the mornings and I know how good he really is. They’ve found out he does well with time between his races. They gave him some time for this and he came back running. I had a beautiful trip today and I had the right horse.”

Big Macher ran the six furlongs in 1:08.82 and won by a neck at odds of 9-1.
