Caracortado to Skip Eddie D

From Santa Anita Publicity ARCADIA, Calif. (Sept. 17, 2012) -- Mike Machowksy said Monday morning that Caracortado would not make the inaugural running of the Eddie D Stakes at Santa Anita on opening day Sept. 29. The trainer, who celebrates his 47th birthday on Wednesday, said he still hoped to make the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita on Nov. 3.

“He won’t make the Eddie D, but I hope to make the Breeders’ Cup,” Machowsky said. “I’m waiting for the frog (an integral component of the hoof) to fill in completely.”

Caracortado has been out of action since the Daytona Stakes at Santa Anita last Jan. 8, when he suffered a burn on the frog of his right front foot. Machowsky had hoped to have the late-running California-bred chestnut ready before the Eddie D, formerly run as the Morvich Stakes at about 6 ½ furlongs on turf, but the injury has taken much longer to properly heal than initially anticipated.

Caracortado, a rags-to-riches gelding who won his first five starts, including Santa Anita’s Grade II Robert B. Lewis Stakes as a 3-year-old, has nine wins from 19 career starts, with earnings of $864,105.
