‘Chrome Might Race in 2017

CYPRESS, Calif. (May 13, 2016) — Trainer Art Sherman laid out summer and fall race plans for fan favorite and Eclipse Award winner California Chrome on Thursday, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times. Chrome will start twice at Santa Anita Park and twice at Del Mar, with the goal of sweeping the Pacific Classic, Awesome Again, and Breeders’ Cup Classic, which would enable the team to pick up a $1 million bonus offered by The Stronach Group.

Sherman also said there was a possibility the horse could run next year. The announcement yesterday of plans for the Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park has the trainer thinking about running the horse in late January, depending upon his form and physical condition. The Cup’s scheduling in late January would still allow California Chrome to retire in time for the start of the 2017 breeding season. Sherman also hasn’t ruled out the possibility that Chrome could run later in his 6-year-old season.

California Chrome is scheduled to breeze Saturday at Los Alamitos.
