TORONTO, Canada (Aug. 19, 2012) – California-based freshman sire and Grade 1 winner Heatseeker picked up his first winner on Saturday at Woodbine when Surtsey rallied from sixth place and drew off in the stretch to win in her fourth career start.
Ontario-bred Surtsey covered six furlongs in 1:12.18 on Woodbine’s synthetic Polytrack surface. Surtsey is out of the stakes-placed Bold Executive mare Kick’em Jenny, who is a half sister to 2005 Queen’s Plate Stakes winner and sire Wild Desert.
Heatseeker, a 9-year-old by Giant’s Causeway out of the Defensive Play mare Rusty Back, stands at Harris Farms in Coalinga, California. He has 60 2-year-olds in his first crop and Surtsey is one of seven starters to date.
Heatseeker won seven times from 17 starts in four seasons of racing, capped by a win in the 2008 Santa Anita Handicap (G1) where he set a track record of 2:00.42 for 11⁄4 miles on Santa Anita’s Park’s synthetic surface. He also won two other graded stakes for his career.
