Retired Trainer Tinsley Dead at 81

ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 5, 2010) -- Julius 'Cotton' Tinsley, a retired trainer who won the 1963 Santa Anita Handicap with Crozier, was found dead on Monday in California�s San Bernardino National Forest. He was 81.
Tinsley had been missing since New Year�s Eve. He lived in Arcadia, and his wife, Patricia, told the Pasadena Star News that he regularly took day trips to the mountains near San Bernardino. His body was found about 300 feet down an embankment. Police do not suspect foul play or suicide.
Tinsley retired in 2000 after a career spanning more than 50 years. He trained many of his best horses for owner-breeder Fred Hooper, including Crozier, who also won the 1962 Aqueduct Stakes and Palos Verdes Handicap and �63 San Bernardino and San Carlos Handicaps.
Hooper and Tinsley also teamed to win the 1961 Monmouth Oaks with My Portrait, �61 Las Flores Handicap with Bright Holly, �63 Californian Stakes with Winonly, �64 San Carlos with Admiral�s Voyage, 1977 Santa Ynez Stakes (G3) with Wavy Waves, �77 Los Angeles Handicap (G2) with Beat Inflation, and �77 Honeymoon Handicap (G3) with Joyous Ways.
Tinsley trained for other prominent owners, including Dan Lasater, Glen Hill Farm, and Arthur Appleton. He and his wife were married for 52 years and had two grown children. Funeral information has not been announced.
