ARCADIA, Calif. (May 6, 2017)–Undefeated Sircat Sally unleashed another completely dominant front-running performance on Saturday at Santa Anita, taking the Grade III, $100,000 Senorita Stakes for 3-year-old fillies by 1 ½ lengths under Stewart Elliott. Owned and bred in California by Joe L. Turner and trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, she got a flat mile on turf in 1:35.83 while notching her sixth consecutive win.
With regular pilot Mike Smith away to ride at Churchill Downs, Elliott put Sircat Sally on the lead and dictated terms through leisurely splits of 24.24, 48.45, 1:12.83 and 1:24.46.
“She made the lead easily and she’s push-button to ride,” said Elliott. She’ll slow down, speed up, whatever you want. When I asked her the last part, she finished out.”
Off at 2-5 in a field of six 3-year-old fillies, Sircat Sally, the lone California-bred in the lineup, paid $2.80, $2.20 and $2.10.
“She’s very professional,” said Hollendorder assistant, Dan Ward. “She has just as much kick as the closers, but she has more speed. It’s a very good combination.”
When asked if he’s ever had a horse win six races in a row, Turner responded, “No, never, and I’ve been breeding horses for over 30 years. This is like a dream come true. Her mother, Sister Sally, just had a beautiful filly by Square Eddie, so we’re excited for the future.”
With the winner’s share of $60,000, Sircat Sally increased her earnings to $408,860.
Finishing second was the Simon Callaghan-trained Beau Recall, a deep closer who rallied resolutely from last to overtake Pacific Wind by a head for second money. Off at 5-1 with Joe Talamo up, Beau Recall paid $3.80 and $2.80.
“No complaints,” said Talamo. “As you saw, she really kicked it in the last part and we got up to beat a nice filly, Pacific Wind for second. The pace was slow, but she still finished really good. Simon’s done a great job with her and she keeps getting better.”
Ridden by Jamie Theriot, Pacific Wind finished a half length in front of Spy Ring and paid $3.00 to show.
