Red Outlaw Remains Perfect

ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 19, 2014)–In one of the most impressive efforts of the current Autumn Meet, California-bred Red Outlaw ran his unbeaten streak to six in taking Sunday’s $75,000 Uniformity Stakes geared down by 2 ½ lengths under Edwin Maldonado, getting 6 ½ furlongs down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course in 1:11.92.

Trained by Peter Miller and heavily favored 4-5, Red Outlaw rocketed out of the gate and led throughout while smoking through fractions of 21.30, 43.36 and 1:05.97. He paid $3.80, $3.00 and $2.40.

Challenged momentarily as the field of eight sophomores made the dirt crossing at the top of the lane, Red Outlaw accelerated when called upon and left many onlookers thinking the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint could be a possibility on Nov. 1.

“He always breaks good,” said Maldonado, who has ridden Red Outlaw to four of his victories. “I knew we were going fast, but I wanted him to be by himself so I just let him roll. He definitely ran way better today that he did last time (a 3 ¾ length win in the one mile Polytrack El Cajon Stakes Aug. 29). There’s no doubt in my mind he could win the Breeders’ Cup (Turf) Sprint…He’s one of the best horses I’ve ridden here.”

With California-bred incentives factored in, the winner’s share came to $60,900, boosting Red Outlaw’s earnings to $346,100. Bred by Liberty Road Stables and owned by Blinkers On Racing Stable, Aurelio, Bizovi, Coons, Dizonno, Gaylord and partners, Red Outlaw was scratched out of Saturday’s $100,000 California Flag Handicap versus state-breds and thus registered his fourth win in open company today.

“We opted out of yesterday’s race because we were dealing with a bit of a foot issue,” said Miller. “He had a bruised foot and the extra day really helped. Feet, they get sore quick, but they heal quick sometimes, so that extra day helped.”

Although he’s Breeders’ Cup eligible, Blinkers On owner and managing partner, Scott Sherwood, indicated Red Outlaw may instead stretch out in his next start. “Pete mentioned the Twilight Derby (Grade II, 1 1/8 miles turf on Oct. 31) and that might be a good spot,” said Sherwood. “We want to keep him winning.”

Ridden by Tyler Baze, Forever Juanito sat next to last past the half mile pole and rallied wide-out through the stretch to outrun Street Icon late and finish second by a half length. Off at 11-1, he paid $7.60 and $3.80.

Street Icon was close up early and loomed menacingly turning for home, but was third best under Joe Talamo. The second choice at 4-1, he paid $3.20 to show.
