Three Grade I Winners in Sprint

ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 26, 2011) – Defending champion Cost of Freedom takes on fellow Grade I winners M One Rifle and Bob Black Jack in Saturday’s contentious $100,000 Donald Valpredo California Cup Sprint, for Cal-breds or Cal-sireds at Santa Anita.

Mensa Heat is by Unusual Heat, out of the Ole mare Chi Chi Nette, was bred by Madeline Auerbach and David Abrams, is owned by Peter Redekop and trained by Ted West. He has eight wins in 39 starts, earnings of $366,258 and is coming off a third in the Oct. 8 Ancient title.

Legal Separation is by Jackpot, out of the Storm Bird mare Stormy Divorce, was bred by Vessels Stallion Farm, is owned by Curt and Lila Lanning and trained by Ed Moger Jr. The $2,000 Northern California Yearling Sale purchase has four wins in 22 starts, earnings of $166,138 and is coming off a fifth in the Sept. 21 Governor’s Cup.

Defending champion Cost of Freedom is by Cee’s Tizzy, out of the Moscow Ballet mare Freedom Dance, was bred by Harris Farms, is owned by Steve Moger and trained by Ed Moger Jr. He has 11 wins in 26 starts, earnings of $910,013 and is coming off a second in a Sept. 17 optional claimer.

Chiloquin is by Tribal Rule, out of the Desert Mirage mare Zzyzzx Road, was bred by Sam & Carl Assadurian, is owned by Asadurian & Hansen and trained by Scott Hansen. He has five wins in 13 starts, earnings of $237,484 and is coming off consecutive wins at Del Mar, including the Aug. 10 Real Good Deal Stakes.

Grade I winner Bob Black Jack is by Stormy Jack, out of the Native Prospector mare Molly’s Prospector, was bred by Gary and Marlene Howard and Bruce Dunmore, is owned by Harmon & Kasparoff and is trained by James Kasparoff. He has five wins in 11 starts, earnings of $684,925 and is making his first start since winning the Feb. 20 San Carlos Handicap. He also holds the Santa Anita synthetic track record for this distance.

Dance With Gable is by Dance Floor, out of the Capote mare Garbo, was bred by Blooming Hills, is owned by MVP Racing Stable or Medina or Williams and is trained by Michael Pender. The $4,500 Barretts purchase has 15 wins in 37 starts, earnings of $492,365 and is coming off a Sept. 17 win when claimed for $40,000.

Courtside is by Cindago, out of the Boston Harbor mare Wet, was bred by Lee and Susan Searing, is owned by CRK Stable and trained by John Sadler. He has four wins in nine starts, earnings of $118,300 and is coming off an eighth in an Oct. 2 optional claimer.

Warren’s Knockout is by Stormed, out of the Doneraile Court mare Now My Precious, was bred by owner Benjamin Warren and is trained by Jorge Gutierrez. He has three wins in 10 starts, earnings of $141,098 and is coming off an eighth in an Oct. 2 optional claimer.

M One Rifle is by One Man Army, out of the Bertrando mare Leanessa, was bred by owners Ed Bernstein, Brian Greenspun, Bruce Headley and Irwin Molasky, and is trained by Headley. He has five wins in 15 starts, earnings of $491,002 and is coming off a seventh in the July 2 Triple Bend.

Frumious is by Grindstone, out of the Gold Legend mare Eternal Legend, was bred by JayArDee Stables, is owned by George or Mary Clare Schmitt and trained by Jeff Bonde. The $17,000 Barretts purchase has three wins in 11 starts, earnings of $97,972 and is coming off a third in a Sept. 17 optional claimer.
