CYPRESS, Calif. (Sept. 5, 2025) — Defending champion Man O Rose is among 16 nominees to the $75,000-guaranteed E.B. Johnston Stakes for California-breds at Los Alamitos.
The one-mile race for 3-year-olds & up bred or sired in California will be run Saturday, Sept. 13, the second day of the September meet at Los Alamitos. The six-day season will continue through Sunday, Sept. 21.
Bred by owners Dr. Bruce Zietz and wife Beverly’s B & B Stables and trained by Jeff Mullins, the 5-year-old Stanford gelding has won half of his 14 starts and earned $339,340.
Idle since finishing a distant second behind Big City Lights in the Cary Grant last Nov. 9, Man O Rose won the Johnston by eight lengths in his Los Alamitos debut. The last back-to-back winner of the race is Soi Phet, who scored in 2016-2017.
The other nominees, in alphabetical order, are Barely Funtional, the filly Bit’s Tiger Magic, who has won four of six for Griffin Racing LLC and trainer Peter Miller, Brazenly, recent Del Mar winner Canani, the graded-stakes winning mare Chismosa, Drop Um, Flyover, Left Hand Man, Mr. Disrespectful, Mystic Spirit, Shea Brennan, Shortman, a four-time winner at Los Alamitos, Speedy Wilson, Stamp My Passport and Strongerthanbefore.
Entries for the Bertrando will be taken Wednesday, Sept. 10.
