CYPRESS, Calif. (Dec. 14, 2023) – One week after Madison Rae became the first stakes winner for the stallion Pavel in the Soviet Problem, Stay On the Fence will try to become the second for the son of Creative Cause in the $100,000 King Glorious Sunday.
Named in honor of the winner of the 1988 Hollywood Futurity and 1989 Haskell, the one-mile King Glorious is restricted to 2-year-old Golden State Series-eligibles.
Post time for the final day of the Winter Thoroughbred meet is 11:30 a.m. The King Glorious will be the last of 12 races. Approximate post time is 4:30 p.m.
Owned by breeder J. Paul Reddam’s Reddam Racing LLC, Stay On the Fence, who is out of The Factor mare Factor of Two, broke his maiden in his fifth career start, winning by 1 ½ lengths Nov. 18 at Del Mar.
Trained by Antonio Garcia, Stay On the Fence, who has earned $70,660, will be racing beyond seven furlongs for the first time.
Reddam, who is seeking his fourth win in the King Glorious at Los Alamitos, will also be represented by another homebred, Stolen Treasure.
A Nyquist colt out of the Invincible Spirit mare Little Treasure, Stolen Treasure is the lone member of the field with a win at the King Glorious distance. The bay led throughout to post a 7-1 upset on the Del Mar turf Dec. 1. He’s 1-for-5 with a bankroll of $65,240.
Reddam’s previous King Glorious victories came with Found Money (2015), Ann Arbor Eddie (2016) and Play Chicken (2020).
Tom Seaver will try more distance and a surface switch after a debut victory going six furlongs on the Santa Anita grass Oct. 22.
Owned by breeder Nick Alexander and trained by Phil D’Amato, the gray colt is a son of Sir Prancealot and the Grazen mare Enola Gray. The win by three-quarters of a length was worth $36,600.
Size Does Matter ships south for owner Brent Malmstrom and trainer Ruby Thomas after a first out win vs. $25,000 claimers Nov. 3 over the synthetic surface at Golden Gate Fields.
A son of Mr. Big and the Yankee Gentleman mare Belloma earned $10,200 for the decisive win as the 8-5 choice.
Gentlemen’s Club returns to the scene of his maiden victory for owner-breeders Rainmaker Racing and Alfred Pais and trainer Craig Lewis.
A Clubhouse Ride colt out of the A.P. Warrior mare Girl Downstairs, Gentlemen’s Club rallied from far off the pace to defeat $50,000 maiden state breds Sept. 16. He’s banked $31,500 in five starts.
Lewis will be trying to win the King Glorious for the second time, having tallied with Club Aspen in 2019.
Trainer Peter Miller, who won the King Glorious a year ago with Giver Not a Taker, will seek a repeat with Last Call London.
A Stay Thirsty gelding out of the Empire Way mare Zo Lo’s Love owned by Tom London, Eugene Zondlo and breeder Terry Lovingier, Last Call London has a win in seven appearances and earnings of $96,870.
Trained by Victor Trujillo for Norman Tavares and breeder Daehling Farms LLC, Clever Clover will make his dirt debut after three races at Golden Gate.
The Rumpus Cat gelding out of the Peppered Cat mare Paprika Red led gate-to-wire as the 5-2 favorite in his second outing Nov. 12. He’s yet to be worse than third and has banked $36,306, but each of his races were at 5 ½ furlongs.
The most experienced member of the field is Mici’s Express, who has one win in nine starts for owner Thomas Halasz and trainer Steve Knapp.
A Slew’s Tiznow colt out of the Harlan’s Holiday mare Harlan Express, Mici’s Express has earned $126,530. He was last seen finishing fourth in the Golden State Juvenile Nov. 3 in Arcadia.
