Chismosa, Man O Rose in E.B. Johnston

CYPRESS, Calif. (Sept. 10, 2025) – Graded stakes winner Chismosa takes on defending champion Man O Rose and the boys in Saturday’s $75,000-guaranteed E. B. Johnston Stakes at Los Alamitos.

Restricted to 3-year-olds & up bred or sired in California, the one-mile Johnston is the ninth of 10 races on the second day of the September Thoroughbred meet.

Post time Saturday is 1 p.m. and approximate post time for the Johnston is 5 p.m.

Owned by breeder Jaime Renella and trained by Rafael DeLeon, Chismosa will stretch out and take on males as she seeks her first win as a 5-year-old.

The daughter of Clubhouse Ride and the Cal Dreams mare You Can Dream, Chismosa, who has won six of 27 and banked $636,750, will be making her sixth start of 2025.

A distant third behind Sweet Azteca in the Grade III Rancho Bernardo Aug. 24, the dark bay was unplaced in her only previous try at the Johnston distance.

Trained by Jeff Mullins for breeder Dr. Bruce Zietz and wife Beverly’s B and B Stables, Inc., Man O Rose, a 5-year-old Stanford gelding out of the Good Journey mare Kathleen Rose, led throughout in last year’s Johnston, ultimately prevailing by eight lengths as the 11-10 choice.

A winner of seven of 14 lifetime with earnings of $339,340, Man O Rose  has been idle since finishing a distant second behind heavily-favored Big City Lights in the Cary Grant Stakes last Nov. 9 at Del Mar.

Bred by Richard Barton Enterprises, Left Hand Man will be seeking his third consecutive victory in his debut for Altamira Racing Stable, Black Chip Stables and Rooster Coup Racing and trainer Peter Miller.

Claimed for $20,000 by his current connections out of a narrow win in his first attempt at one mile Aug. 23, the 5-year-old Cat Burglar gelding has won four of 12. Left Hand Man, who is out of the Square Eddie mare Moonie, has earned $147,900.

Shortman is the most accomplished member of the field in terms of wins at Los Alamitos.

The 6-year-old Prince of Love horse has four victories in 12 appearances in Orange County and has been 2-3 in six of his eight defeats.

Out of the Smarty Jones mare Shorty Jones, Shortman has won five of 41 and banked $249,612 for owner-breeder Sergio Zepeda and trainer Genaro Vallejo.

Stamp My Passport, a 6-1 winner of an optional claimer during the Los Angeles County Fair meet earlier in the year, will be seeking his third score of 2025 for owner-breeders Thomas and Debora Shapiro and trainer Leonard Powell.

A gelded son of Vancouver and the Street Boss mare Sweet Boss, the 6-year-old is 5-for-17 with a bankroll of $204,572.

Bred by Danuario Ramirez, Mystic Spirit will debut for owner Thomas Urbina and trainer Edwin Alvarez after being claimed for $20,000 out of a fifth-place finish on turf Aug. 30.

A 4-year-old Danzing Candy gelding out of the Pure Prize mare Rowdy Gal, Mystic Spirit has won three of 12 and earned $151,644.  He will be making his initial start at Los Alamitos as he aims for his first on the board finish in his fifth race of 2025.
