LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 17, 2020) — Back-to-back California-bred Horse of the Year Spiced Perfection has been privately purchased and transferred from trainer Peter Miller to Mark Casse. The 5-year-old mare will target the $100,000 Winning Colors Stakes (G3) May 30 going six furlongs at Churchill Downs, according to Casse.
“She was privately purchased by Haruya Yoshida over the winter, and she’s been a great addition to our barn,” Casse said. “I think we’re going to be on target for the Winning Colors and get her 5-year-old campaign going at Churchill.”
The multiple Grade I-winning Spiced Perfection recorded a bullet May 17, getting a half-mile in :47 on a fast track at Churchill. The work was the fastest of 134 at the distance. The California-bred daughter of Smiling Tiger worked an opening quarter-mile split of :22 3/5 and galloped out five furlongs in 1:02.
Spiced Perfection’s previous ownership group was Pantofel Stable, Wachtel Stable, and Peter Deutsch. She has earned over $1.2 million with grade 1 wins in the La Brea and Madison stakes at Santa Anita Park and Keeneland, respectively. She also scored a narrow victory in the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes (G2) at Keeneland.
Following a fourth in the Nov. 2 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) at Santa Anita, Spiced Perfection was offered through ELiTE to the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. She did not meet her reserve when the hammer fell at $1.35 million but returned to the track in December to win the Go for Wand Handicap (G3) at Aqueduct Racetrack.
Spiced Perfection made her season debut Jan. 25 in the Inside Information Stakes Presented by Runhappy Matchmaker Series (G2) at Gulfstream Park. She finished fourth after briefly gaining the lead in the stretch.
