LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Sept. 5, 2020) — This time there would be no denying Beau Recall.
After rating in fifth early in the spread-out field of six, the Irish-bred daughter of California stallion Sir Prancealot delivered a powerful rally through the stretch to surge past 1-2 favorite Newspaperofrecord and post a 1 1/2-length victory in the $500,000 Longines Churchill Distaff Turf Mile Stakes (G2T) Sept. 5 at Churchill Downs.
Just two starts back, Slam Dunk Racing and Medallion Racing’s Beau Recall finished second to Newspaperofrecord when her rally from 11 lengths back in the Just A Games Stakes (G1T) June 27 at Belmont Park came up three lengths short against the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1T) winner.
Beau Recall secured her sixth stakes win, fourth graded stakes win, and defended her 2019 score, when she defeated Got Stormy.
Beau Recall is trained by Brad Cox, who secured his third graded stakes win in two days at Churchill after winning the Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1) with Shedaresthedevil and the La Troienne Stakes Presented by Oak Grove Racing and Gaming (G1) with Monomoy Girl Sept. 4.
“I kind of thought we had a big shot, to be honest,” Cox said, noting that Beau Recall’s fifth-place finish in the Yellow Ribbon Handicap (G2T) Aug. 8 at Del Mar proved to be too soon after the Just A Game. “The California race is a complete throw-out. She trained great after that. I ran her back a little quick, shipping there and back, but she was doing really good. We could tell in the mornings she was primed and ready to go.”
Back at the scene of her Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies victory, Newspaperofrecord enjoyed a clear lead throughout the early going under Javier Castellano. The 4-year-old Lope de Vega filly cruised through a half-mile in :47.95 and six furlongs in 1:11.82, where she put away a challenge from Juliet Foxtrot.
But Beau Recall, with Manny Franco up for the first time, gobbled up ground four wide and engaged the frontrunner turning for home and drove past the early leader with ease. Beau Recall wasn’t threatened late as she completed the one-mile test in 1:35.39 on firm turf. The daughter of Sir Prancealot put a four-race losing streak to bed as she secured her first win since last year’s Yellow Ribbon.
“She knows how to get it done. I just rode her with confidence,” Franco said. “I let her have the target in front of us. I was patient until we got in the clear, and that’s when I asked her to run and she just exploded.”
Beau Recall was bred in Ireland by Tom Wallace out of the winning Great Commotion mare Greta d’Argent, who has produced six winners, including stakes-placed Coolminx. She improved her earnings to $1,411,412 with the most lucrative score of her 29-start career, and took her record to eight wins and eight seconds. Cox would like to see her grab a grade 1 score.
“She’s beat some serious grade 1 winners,” Cox said. “We’re trying to get her one, hopefully, get her one at some point. I’m very proud of her.”
