ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 13, 2021)–Ben and Sally Warren’s classy homebred Warren’s Showtime heads a field of nine older fillies and mares going six furlongs on turf in Saturday’s $150,000 Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf Sprint at Santa Anita. One of five Cal Cup Day stakes, this year’s Turf Sprint will be run for the first time out of Santa Anita’s new turf chute.
Presented by John Deere, the Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf Sprint is part of the CTBA’s lucrative Golden State Series for eligible California-bred fillies and mares four and up.
Trained by Craig Lewis, Warren’s Showtime comes off a solid third, beaten one length, in the one mile turf Lady of Shamrock here on Dec. 26. The leading money earner in the field with $551,431, Warren’s Showtime is a four-time stakes winner on turf, including a gutty neck victory three starts back in the Grade III Autumn Miss on Oct. 17 at one mile.
A long striding 4-year-old daughter of Clubhouse Ride, out of the Warrens’ Grade I stakes winning Warren’s Veneda, Warren’s Showtime is winless in four sprints, all on dirt. With leading rider Juan Hernandez riding her back off of her third place run on opening day, Warren’s Showtime, who has five overall stakes wins, will try to improve upon her career mark of 15-6-1-6. She won last year’s Cal Cup Oaks.
Fourth in the Kalookan Queen Stakes here on Sunday at 6 ½ furlongs on the main track, Rockingham Ranch’s Mo See Cal is wheeling back quickly for trainer Peter Miller and the question is–Will she run? A 6-year-old mare by Uncle Mo, she took the seven furlong dirt Betty Grable Stakes by 3 ¾ lengths two starts back on Nov. 8. With an overall mark of 20-6-4-2, she has earnings of $343,164 and is scheduled to be ridden for the first time by turf specialist Umberto Rispoli. Mo See Cal was bred by Rozamund Barclay.
A lightly raced 5-year-old mare by Acclamation, out of the multiple stakes winning Tribal Rule mare Ismene, Nardini ships south from Golden Gate Fields for Legacy Ranch and trainer Andy Mathis in search of her first stakes win. A close third going 5 ½ furlongs over the Santa Anita turf in the California Distaff Handicap two starts back on Oct. 10, Nardini was most recently fifth, beaten five lengths by Mo See Cal in the Betty Grable Nov. 8. With Joel Rosario engaged for the first time, Nardini will be bidding for her fourth win from nine career starts. She was bred by Stephen Ferraro.
Idle since well beaten in her lone start of the year in the one mile turf Fran’s Valentine Stakes here on June 6, George Krikorian’s homebred Hollywood Hills has back class but a significant recency deficit. A gutty nose winner versus Cal-breds in the seven furlong dirt Fleet Treat Stakes three starts back in July, 2019, she was subsequently a well beaten second by Fighting Mad in the Grade III Torrey Pines Stakes at one mile on dirt Aug. 17, 2019. Trained by Art Sherman at Los Alamitos, Hollywood Hills, a 5-year-old mare by Hoorayforhollywood out of the Malibu Moon mare Two Faced Moon, brings an overall mark of 13-6-2-2, with earnings of $208,668.
