Another Alexander/Grazen Stakes Winner

From Golden Gate Publicity

ALBANY, Calif. (Apr. 30, 2023) – California-bred Carole Lombard continued the dominating weekend of breeder/owner Nick Alexander and stallion Grazen on Sunday by rallying through the lane to edge Proof She Zips and win the $75,000 Campanile Stake for Golden State Series-eligible 3-year-old fillies at Golden Gate.

Out of the Afleet Alex mare Shesabronxbomber and trained by Phil D’Amato, Carole Lombard has three wins in six starts, earnings of $151,820 and was coming off a Mar. 31 optional claimer win.

Carole Lombard ran the mile on turf in 1:37.97 and won by a neck at odds of 7-5 in a field of six. Proof She Zips was second and favored Sell the Dream was third.

On Saturday, Alexander was the breeder and owner of Cal-bred Grazen daughters Rose Maddux, winner of the Golden Poppy Stakes and Alice Marble, winner of the Camilla Urso, both at Golden Gate.

Carole Lombard, given a well-timed ride by Golden Gate Fields Winter/Spring meet leading rider Assael Espinoza, sat off a quick 45- and 4/5-seconds half-mile time set by early leader Rousing Jewel. Carole Lombard began a move on the far turn run and swung outside turning for home to stay in the clear for the stretch drive. Doing her best work in the final stages, she rallied down the center of the track and edged out Proof She Zips in the final strides.
