Chismosa Returns to Dirt and Winner’s Circle

DEL MAR, Calif. (Nov. 10, 2024) – Graded winner Chismosa, last early while odds-on favorite Pushiness pushed a blistering pace, returned to dirt with a thrilling neck win in Sunday’s $100,000 Betty Grable Stakes for Golden State Series-eligible fillies and mares at Del Mar.

Chismosa is by Clubhouse Ride, out of the Cat Dreams mare You Can Dream, was bred by owner Jaime Renella and is trained by Rafael DeLeon.

“I looked in the face of the horse today and thought, ‘She’ll win today for sure,’ ” DeLeon told FanDuel TV.

“I told my jockey (Tiago Pereira) ‘Don’t push the horse.’ She got the bit, looked for a clear space and she took care of business. She closed super. I got a little scared in the last part because she didn’t change leads but fortunately my horse did the job. I was happy somebody was pushing the horse in front (Pushiness) because the horse in front is very quick.”

Chismosa has six wins in 22 starts, earnings of $579,750 and was coming off a ninth in the Oct. 12 California Distaff on the turf. Chismosa was fifth in this race last year. Big Summer was second and 3-5 pick Pushiness — who clicked off fractions of 21.88, 44.51 and 1:09.21 — was third.

Chismosa, the 5-2 second choice, ran the seven furlongs in 1:22.74.
