Expert Panel to Select CTBA Racing Champions

ARCADIA, Calif. (Dec. 30, 2024) – A blue-ribbon panel of industry experts will decide all California Thoroughbred Breeders Association year-end divisional racing champions, including Horse of the Year, effective immediately.

The panel will consist of California racing secretaries David Jerkens, Jason Egan and Tom Doutrich and will be overseen by Santa Anita track announcer Frank Mirahmadi.

By tapping the input of executives that are most closely involved in the racing performance of California-breds, and in the best position to recognize talent and achievement, the voting change will also streamline the selection process, ensuring fair and representative outcomes.

In addition to Horse of the Year, the panel will determine these champions: 2-Year-Old Male, 3-Year-Old Male, Older Male, 2-Year-Old Female, 3-Year-Old Female, Older Female, Sprinter, Turf, Broodmare of the Year.

Independent statistical computations by Equibase will continue to determine Champion Stallions in each division, as well as Champion Breeder.

As in previous years, winners will be honored at the CTBA annual meeting and awards dinner on Mar. 3 at the Le Meridien Hotel in Arcadia, with further details to be announced.
