Shea Brennan, Familiar Rivals in ‘Chrome Derby

ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 6, 2025) – The top five finishers in the Dec. 15 King Glorious Stakes, including winner Shea Brennan, resume their rivalry in the rescheduled $175,000 California Chrome Cal Cup Derby for 3-year-olds on Saturday, Jan. 18, at Santa Anita.

Northern California Yearling Sale graduate I’m a Bad Boy is by Stay Thirsty, out of the Roman Ruler mare Donita’s Ruler, was bred by Terry Lovingier, is owned by C T R Stables and trainer by Luis Mendez. The $18,000 purchase at the Northern California Yearling Sale has two wins in eight starts, earnings of $145,080 and is coming off a second in the Dec. 15 King Glorious.

Accidental Genius is by I’ll Have Another, out of the Square Eddie mare Radish, was bred by owner Reddam Racing and is trained by Edward Freeman. He has two wins in five starts, earnings of $57,490 and is coming off a third in the Dec. 15 Bay Meadows Juvenile Stakes.

Shea Brennan is by Tough Sunday, out of the Old Topper mare Carrie Rose, was bred by owner Nick Alexander and is trained by Phil D’Amato. He has two wins in five starts, earnings of $144,600 and is coming off a win in the Dec. 15 King Glorious.

“He really showed what he wants to do last time when we stretched him out around two turns,” D’Amato told DRF.com. “He’s getting better with distance and age.”

R Heisman is a Kentucky-bred son of California stallion Far From Over, out of the First American mare Parisienne, was bred by Highclere, is owned by Gary Barber and trained by Peter Miller. He has two wins in eight starts, earnings of $168,450 and is coming off a third in the Dec. 15 King Glorious.

Drop Um is by Far From Over, out of the Include mare Behavioral, was bred by Dr. & Mrs. William Gray, is owned by Gray Farms and trained by Felix Rondan. He has two wins in three starts, earnings of $77,550 and is coming off a second in the Dec. 15 Bay Meadows Juvenile Stakes.
