DEL MAR, Calif. (Sept. 1, 2025) – Longshot Too Sassy pulled away late to win Sunday’s $100,000 Generous Portion Stakes for Golden State Series-eligible 2-year-old fillies at Del Mar.
Too Sassy is by Om, out of the Bedford Falls mare I’m Sassy, was bred by Hugh Yamshon, Sam Scolamieri and Woodbridge Farms, is owned by Windy Ridge Stables and trained by Scolamieri. She has two wins in three starts, earnings of $110,400 and was coming off an Aug. 7 maiden win.
“She’s gotten better all summer and that last race was kind of convincing to me that I had to at least give it a try,” said Scolamieri. “That was a great bunch of fillies in there and I was really up against it, but I kept telling our friends, let’s mix it up. Let’s go after those guys, not just give it away, let’s go for it.
“I’m really surprised, with this caliber of field. I’m pleased, believe me. A lot of work went into her and she’s still not the full package yet. She’s still got some maturing to do. But for the moment, I’m just jumping for joy.”
Too Sassy, ridden by Umberto Rispoli, ran the 5 ½ furlongs in 1:04.02 and won by three lengths at odds of 25-1. Mohaven was second and favored Liberation was third in a field of eight.
“She really breaks fast,” said Rispoli. “I knew that last two starts; she really outbroke everyone on the turf. I was in the stakes race and I was actually beside her.
“I was feeling comfortable going around the backside, she just keep running for me. I had a big help from the horse outside of me, help going into the turn. Down the lane she kept running. She switched leads and I was home free. I think she could be a versatile filly. You know, that’s a big advantage for a trainer. She didn’t look like a 25-1 going to the three-eighth pole and I enjoyed the moment.”
