DEL MAR, Calif. (Aug. 28, 2013) – Sunday Rules, the 3-10 favorite, took command down the backstretch and romped to a stakes-record victory in Wednesday’s $150,000 Generous Portion Stakes for Golden State Series eligible 2-year-old fillies at Del Mar.
With jockey Edwin Maldonado aboard for the joy ride, Sunday Rules sped six furlongs in a rapid 1:09.56 to make it two-for-two in her brief career, bettering the stakes record of 1:09.60 set by One More Angel in 1996. The daughter of Tribal Rule broke her maiden at Del Mar by 4 ½ lengths August 3.
Whatsallthedrama was runner-up, a length in front of Moving Desert, with Rovenna fourth in the field of six fillies.
Sunday Rules, from the barn of Del Mar’s all-time winningest trainer, Mike Mitchell, rewarded her backers in a crowd of 10,538 with $2.60, $2.20 and $2.10 while earning first money of $85,500. She has career earnings of $130,500.
“Her maiden win just blew me away and I felt that if she ran that race again she’d win,” said Mitchell. “And she did. I wasn’t concerned (about fast early fractions) because I’d seen her run the last time. I think she’ll run like this on the dirt. I don’t think she’s a synthetic specialist or anything like that. So we’ll take her to Santa Anita and we’ll find a nice race for her.”
Whatsallthedrama, who had Rafael Bejarano in the irons, paid $3.60 and $2.40, while Moving Desert Returned $2.40 to show.
