ARCADIA, Calif. (June 17, 2021)–A seven length first-out maiden winner, trainer Jorge Periban’s At the Spa heads a field of five juvenile fillies going five eighths of a mile in Sunday’s $100,000 Fasig-Tipton Debutante at Santa Anita.
A one length first-out winner at Gulfstream Park when trained by Mark Casse, Laurel Canyon has been transferred to Peter Miller and will be ridden by Flavien Prat. She was bred by Thomas Bachman.
A California-bred daughter of the Uncle Mo stallion Outwork, out of the Smoke Glacken mare Spa Creek, At the Spa was bred by Terry Lovingier and is owned by Lovingier, Tom Beckerle and Saul Carrillo.
Off at 4-5 for her 4 ½ furlong debut here on May 7, At the Spa opened up around the far turn and stopped the clock at 52.40, earning a 64 Beyer Speed figure. With Tyler Baze engaged to ride her back, At the Spa figures tough right back on Sunday.
Owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Gary Barber, Laurel Canyon is a California-bred filly by Kentucky Derby winning Nyquist, out of the Malibu Moon mare Moon River. Laurel Canyon fetched $135,000 at the Fasig-Tipton California Fall Yearling Sale and was off as the 2-1 favorite in her five furlong debut at Gulfstream on May 13. With Prat opting for Laurel Canyon over impressive local maiden winner Munny Penny, she’ll no doubt be well supported at the windows.
Second, beaten seven lengths by At the Spa first time out, Munny Penny came back to blitz five rivals going 4 ½ furlongs on May 28, winning by 5 ½ lengths as the 4-5 favorite. Bred in California by her owner, Terry Lovingier, Munny Penny is by Kentucky-based Munnings and is out of the Animal Kingdom mare Northern Song. Trained by Walther Solis, she’ll be ridden for the first time by Umberto Rispoli.
