Lovesick Blues Preps in California Flag

From Santa Anita Publicity ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 7, 2025)—Three weeks ahead of an expected start in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, Lovesick Blues will take on fellow California-breds in Saturday’s $100,000 California Flag Handicap going about 6 ½ furlongs on the hillside turf course for Golden State Series eligibles at Santa Anita. Lovesick Blues locked up an automatic bid to the Breeders’ Cup Sprint on Nov. 1 at Del Mar with a surprising 1 ¾-length win in the GI Bing Crosby going six furlongs on dirt July 26 at Del Mar. The Bing Crosby was the 7-year-old gelding’s first graded stakes win and second stakes win overall in 41 starts. Late last year, Lovesick Blues was purchased privately by trainer Librado Barocio for his Mia Familia Stable from prominent California breeder Nick Alexander. Lovesick Blues is well-acquainted with Santa Anita’s unique hillside turf course. Grand Slam Smile Seeks Distaff Repeat

By DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 6, 2025) – Grand Slam Smile’s price will be much shorter in the California Distaff Handicap for Golden State Series-eligible fillies and mares on Sunday at Santa Anita than a year ago when she scored a $23.40 upset. Only five are entered in the hillside turf, and trainer Sean McCarthy is confident Grand Slam Smile will fire. She always does. “You have to respect the field, for sure,” McCarthy said. “It’s still a horse race, and anything can happen, but she’s been training as she’s been training all year. We’re happy with the way she’s going into it.” A favorite has not won the California Distaff on the hill since 2014. Repeat winner Just Grazed Me won as the favorite on the main turf oval in 2020. Historical trivia is not likely to stall Grand Slam Smile, a six-time stakes winner who runs well going short and long, on turf and dirt. The California Distaff is race 1 Saturday, and Grand Slam Smile is the... ...

By DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 3, 2025) — California-bred Chismosa changed owner and breeder Jaime Renella’s outlook on racing. Detour for Grade I Winner Lovesick Blues

By DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Sept. 21, 2025) — California-bred Lovesick Blues will take a downhill detour on his path to the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. After his $39.20 upset in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes on July 26 at Del Mar, plans called for Lovesick Blues to train into the BC Sprint three months later on Nov. 1 at Del Mar. Then trainer Librado Barocio reconsidered. “The more I thought about it, it’s a long road, and if he’s going to be on his game (for the BC Sprint), I need to tighten him up a little bit,” Borocio said Sunday at Santa Anita. “I think I’ll run him down the hill.” Rather than train Lovesick Blues into the BC Sprint, Borocio will start Lovesick Blues in the $100,000 California Flag Handicap on Oct. 11 at Santa Anita. Los Alamitos Opens with Momentum

By DRF.com CYPRESS, Calif. (Sept. 11, 2025) — Daytime racing at Los Alamitos resumes Friday without the pomp of Del Mar summer or Santa Anita fall, but at least Los Alamitos will enter its September meet with momentum. Los Alamitos is fresh from a field-size windfall at its June-July meet, with 7.64 horses per race marking the highest average field for a June-July meet since day racing began 12 years ago. The increase, from 6.91 last year, was due to the Northern California shutdown, which caused horses to trickle to Los Alamitos races. “As far as the inventory that’s available to race, it’s been a phenomenal change,” Los Alamitos racing secretary Randy Valdez said. “We had really good fields at the [June-July] meeting, and that had a lot to do with the horsemen from up North.” The two-week Los Alamitos meet that begins Friday is the first September meet at Los Alamitos since Northern California racing ended. Valdez is hopeful the uptick in field size will continue. “It’s hard to predict... ...

Om N Joy Risks Stakes Win Streak

By DRF.com DEL MAR, Calif. – It is widely known 3-year-old fillies have few stakes opportunities on dirt in summer at Del Mar, and they receive even less recognition. It’s unfortunate, because the $150,000 Grade 3 Torrey Pines on Saturday includes two bright lights in the filly dirt division. Tenma, a four-time graded stakes winner, and Om N Joy, a three-time California-bred stakes winner, are principals in the Torrey Pines, race 6 on the Pacific Classic card. The stakes is the first leg of the pick six and Del Mar’s only graded stakes on dirt for 3-year-old fillies. Boss Sully, Book Smart in Green Flash

By DRF.com DEL MAR, Calif. Travel concerns and confusion regarding whether Boss Sully would gain a position in the field of 12 at Kentucky Downs factored into staying at Del Mar, Koriner said. “It became a mess,” he said on Thursday. “We decided to stay home.” The long-term objective remains the same: getting Boss Sully to the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar on Nov. 1.
