Barretts First Del Mar Preview

By Bloodhorse.com

DEL MAR, Calif (May 27, 2015) — Six 2-year-olds breezed the fastest furlong in :10 in the first Barretts under-tack preview the company has held at Del Mar Race Course in preparation for its May sale of 2-year-olds and horses of racing age at the surfside race place May 28.

The sale, which begins at 1 p.m. (PDT) is the first since the California sales company moved its auctions from Pomona to Del Mar.

At Pomona, 2-year-olds breezed on a five-furlong track, while at Del Mar they worked over the mile oval on the new dirt surface. After last year’s fall race meet, Del Mar replaced its Polytrack surface with dirt in time for the sale and the upcoming summer race meeting.

“The track worked out better than we could have ever hoped,” said Kim Lloyd, general manager of Barretts. “It was a safe and consistent track all day long. The horses handled the track very, very well. It played fair to every horse, and every horse had an opportunity to perform.”

The six youngsters with the fastest furlong timesfour fillies and two coltscame from five different consignments.

Kim McCarthy’s McCarthy Bloodstock will offer a colt and filly that clocked in :10 apiece. The colt is Hip 78, a son of Exchange Rate  Lipstick Sunset, by Maria’s Mon, while the filly is Hip 127, a daughter of Broken Vow  Shoes to Match, by Songandaprayer  .

Songandaprayer is the sire of Becky Thomas’ Sequel Bloodstock colt who breezed a furlong in :10. Coming from the supplemental catalog as Hip 155, he is out of the Polish Numbers mare To the Good Times.

The catalog includes a partial dispersal of horses from the late John and Betty Mabee’s Golden Eagle Farm. Many in the catalog are pinhooks from last fall’s Keeneland yearling sale. Checkmate is offering the most expensive from that auction, Hip 83, a son of Candy Ride  Magical Mood, by Forestry. Magical Mood has already produced grade II stakes winner Magical Feeling. The colt was purchased for $250,000 at Keeneland.

Sir Armour is another Keeneland sales graduate. The son of Haynesfield  Lady Giselle, by Broad Brush, sold there for $160,000. Brocklebank Training & Sales has consigned the colt, Hip 71, as agent for Hathaway Thoroughbreds.
