POMONA, Calif. (Jan. 28, 2015) — The Barretts January mixed sale finished on Monday with returns on-par with last year’s renewal.
The one-day auction moved 248 horses for revenues of $2,104,800, up eight percent from the 2014 sale, when 224 horses sold for $1,944,900. The average sale price of $8,487 marked a two percent decline from last year’s figure of $8,683, while the median fell seven percent from $5,350 to $5,000.
The buyback rate finished at 24 percent, up seven percentage points from last year’s auction, where the buyback rate was 17 percent.
A pair of 2-year-olds and a broodmare topped the sale, each hammering for $50,000.
Bruno De Berdt purchased a 2-year-old War Chant colt, as agent, out of the unplaced Bernardini mare Primp. Bred in Kentucky by Calumet Farm, he is the second foal out of Primp, and his second dam is the multiple Grade 2 winner Runway Model.
The colt sold for $15,000 at last year’s Keeneland September yearling sale and he was consigned at the Barretts sale by Mary Knight, agent.
Also reaching the high-water mark was a 2-year-old Gone Astray filly out of the winning Smart Strike mare Striking T, who went to Rozamund Barclay. All four of the dam’s foals to race are winners, including stakes-placed Cambiata and You Bought Her.
The filly was bred in Florida by the partnership of Shade Tree Thoroughbreds, C L Delaplane, and R G Delaplane Trust UA 6. She was a successful pinhook for consignor H & E Ranch, who purchased the filly for $25,000 at last year’s Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. August yearling sale.
Stormy Gigi, a winning 9-year-old Storm Boot mare who went through the ring in foal to Kodiak Kowboy, sold to Ron Stolich. The mare has produced one runner, the Grade 3-placed stakes winner G. G. Ryder, and she is a half sister to Grade 2 winner and Breeders’ Cup Sprint runner-up Force Freeze.
The mare was bred in Kentucky by Dixiana Stables, Inc. and was consigned by Havens Bloodstock, agent.
A Tapizar filly topped the short yearling market, selling to Machmer Hall for $36,000. The gray or roan filly, born in March, is the second foal out of the winning Honour and Glory mare Ashley’s Glory, whose first foal to race is a winner. She was bred in Arizona and consigned by H & E Ranch.
Rozamund Barclay finished as the sale’s top buyer, with five purchases totaling $91,700, including the co-sale-topping 2-year-old Gone Astray filly.
Havens Bloodstock Agency was the January sale’s leading consignor by gross, with 42 horses sold for $407,200, led by co-sale-topper Stormy Gigi.
