DEL MAR, Calif. (Nov. 27, 2025) – California-bred champion Big City Lights and fellow Cal-bred Book Smart are entered in Sunday’s $100,000 Stormy Liberal Stakes at Del Mar.
Big City Lights is by Mr. Big, out of the Exchange Rate mare Champagne Exchange, was bred by Bar C Racing Stable, is owned by William Peeples and trained by Richard Mandella. He has seven wins in 14 starts, earnings of $598,420 and is coming off an eighth in the Nov. 1 Cygames Breeders’ Cup Sprint.
Book Smart is by Stanford, out of the With Distinction mare Magic Lily, was bred by Grasshopper Racing Stable, Inc., Jack Fabulich & Jill Fabulich, is owned by Bernal, Eduardo, Buckendorf, Larry S., Bullard, Charlotte A., Harringer, Tyler and Lambert, Jeffrey and trained by Robert Hess, Jr. He has seven wins in 22 starts, earnings of $331,145 and is coming off a third in an Oct. 11 California Flag Handicap, presented by City National Bank.
