ARCADIA, Calif. (May 17, 2021)–Easily the most impressive juvenile winner of the current meeting, the Luis Mendez-trained California-bred Big City Lights looms a complete standout among five 2-year-olds going five furlongs in Sunday’s $100,000 Fasig-Tipton Futurity at Santa Anita.
Trainer Keith Desormeaux’s Street Art, a facile four length debut winner on May 9, rates second billing.
Off at 1-2, Big City Lights was hustled from his number two post position and was immediately in charge heading into the far turn. In a monstrous performance, he won off by 12 ½ lengths with his ears up while earning a stratospheric 93 Beyer Speed figure. A California-bred colt by Mr. Big, out of the Exchange Rate mare Champagne Exchange and bred by Bar C Racing Stables, Big City Lights is owned by William Peeples and sold for $22,000 at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Fall California Yearling Sale and will be ridden back by Juan Hernandez.
A Kentucky-bred colt by Street Boss, out of the Henny Hughes mare Cool Jazz, Street Art was off as the 8-5 favorite for his 4 ½ furlong debut and did nothing wrong, winning by four lengths while getting 4 ½ furlongs in 52 flat.
Ridden by Desormeaux’s Hall of Fame brother Kent, Street Art, who was purchased for $37,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling, is owned by Rocker O Ranch, LLC.
