Fueled by high-priced purchases out of the Valpredo Family Trust dispersal consigned by Checkmate Thoroughbreds, the sale recorded an average sale price of $14,799 for 83 horses sold, compared to $8,568 from 111 sold last year, an increase in price of 73 percent. The median rose 23 percent, from $6,500 to $8,000.

The sale topper was Shocking Grey, who on Saturday won the $125,000 Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf Sprint at Santa Anita. The 6-year-old daughter of Grazen sold for $170,000 to Francoise DuPuis, agent, for Rockingham Ranch.

Shocking Grey has won 3 of 14 starts with earnings of $250,750. She was third behind Eddie’s New Dream and Stay and Scam in the Fran’s Valentine Stakes for statebred fillies and mares in May 2023, her only stakes appearance prior to Saturday. She was trained by Jeff Mullins.

Shocking Grey’s half-sister, a yearling filly by Corniche, brought $75,000, second-highest price at the sale. Also from the Valpredo Family Trust dispersal consigned by Checkmate Thoroughbreds, out of the Unbridled’s Song mare Seoul Unbridled, she was purchased by Gayle Van Leer, agent.
