The California-bred son of his own stallion Grazen, Tough Sunday was born with symptoms of what is known as dummy foal syndrome; the colt could not see or hear, and he had no nursing instinct. As originally reported by the Pasadena Star-News, Alexander rushed Tough Sunday and his dam Sunday Dress (General Meeting) to the veterinary hospital for treatment, but after a week had gone by the young colt had little improvement to show. (Sept. 17, 2017) — Helen “Penny” Chenery, owner of 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat, who became a well-loved figure in her own right as a champion of Thoroughbreds and women in business and sports, died on Saturday, Sept.16, in her Colorado home following complications from a stroke. She was 95. Penny’s children announced her death through Leonard Lusky, her longtime friend and business partner. Following Secretariat’s retirement from racing, Penny became an ambassador for Thoroughbred racing and remained so even after the champion’s death in 1989. She served as the first female president of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) and president of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation. She became one of the first women admitted to The Jockey Club, helped found the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) and created the Secretariat Vox Populi Award annually honoring racing’s most popular horse, as well as the Secretariat Foundation, which assists and supports various charities within the racing community. He was 62. McKinzie served as the vice president and general manager of the Los Alamitos Racing Association since 2014. He oversaw the expansion of the Orange County oval from a five-furlong track to a one-mile oval, as well as the addition of 700 stalls to accommodate Thoroughbreds following the closure of Hollywood Park, and running the track’s Thoroughbred meets. Arteburn, who has family ties throughout the industry, was 81. Based in Northern California, Arterburn conditioned horses from 1978-2000 and saddled stakes winners like Greager, winner of the 1988 Determine Stakes at Bay Meadows; and three-time stakes winner Pleasant Power, who won stakes at Bay Meadows and Golden Gate Fields. Some of Arterburn’s stakes winners as a rider include Any Time Lady, winner of the 1976 Santa Clara Stakes at Bay Meadows, and Never Slipping, winner of the 1977 Silky Sullivan Handicap at Golden Gate.
