Fresno Starts Expanded Five-week Meet

By DRF.com FRESNO, Calif. (Sept. 11, 2024) — In a year of widespread change in Northern California racing, five weeks of racing begins at Fresno on Friday, a departure from the two-week seasons held for decades in conjunction with the county fair in early October. With the permanent closure of Golden Gate Fields in June, additional racing at Fresno was added to the Northern California calendar to fill a void. In past years, Golden Gate Fields held a race meeting from late August through September. As part of the revamped calendar, the Humboldt County Fair meeting in Ferndale was extended from two weeks to three, ending last Sunday. The first weekend at Fresno is technically run as the final week of the Humboldt county license, as part of an agreement with the... ...

Without R Heisman, I’m Smokin a Scramble

By DRF.com DEL MAR, Calif. (Sept. 4, 2024) — Securely atop the California-bred juvenile class after winning the Graduation Stakes last month, R Heisman will aim for a more ambitious goal. Despite being the early favorite in the $100,000 I’m Smokin Stakes for Golden State Series-eligible 2-year-olds Friday at Del Mar, R Heisman is expected to scratch to run Sunday in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity. Bred by Highclare, owned by Gary Barber and trained by Peter Miller, the colt is an outsider in the Futurity, which Miller won in 2019 with 35-1 longshot Nucky. “I think we’re going in the Futurity,” Miller said Wednesday, referring to R Heisman. “That’s what Mr. Barber wants to do, so that’s what we’re going to do.” The likely defection of R Heisman from the I’m Smokin leaves five runners, including impressive debut winner Shea Brennan, speedster Bodacious, Miller’s maiden winner Style Cat, maiden The Gypsy Cowboy, and longshot Timty. The six-furlong tilt is the second race on Friday’s card which begins at... ...

The Chosen Vron Back in Bing Crosby

By DRF.com DEL MAR, Calif. (July 24, 2024) – Although the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Sprint is the one that got away from The Chosen Vron – his only loss in his last 14 starts – the California-bred gelding’s main objective for 2024 was always the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar. One year after he cemented his reputation as top sprinter in California by winning the Bing Crosby despite a brutal trip, The Chosen Vron will try for a repeat Saturday in the $400,000, six-furlong race. Trainer Eric Kruljac is happy with the gelding’s condition, and wary of the competition. “So far everything’s perfect, he’s on tilt,” Kruljac said last weekend at Del Mar after The Chosen Vron rolled through a sharp half-mile workout under jockey Hector Berrios. But the quality of the Bing Crosby field is not lost on Kruljac. “It’s going to be tougher than last year,” he said. Last year’s Cal-bred Horse of the Year was bred by Tiz Molly Partners and is owned by... ...

The Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton has been pivotal to that success. A winner of 3 of 4 starts at Pleasanton, Top Harbor makes his 2024 debut in Saturday’s $50,000 Oak Tree Sprint at six furlongs, a race he won last year and nearly won in 2021. To succeed this year, Top Harbor races against a daunting fellow California-bred rival in Clovisconnection, a five-time stakes winner who is expected to set the pace. Top Harbor, trained by Tim McCanna, will be closing. Top Harbor’s layoff since November does not concern McCanna as much as the presence of Clovisconnection, who is trained by Blaine Wright and will be a strong favorite. “The horse of Blaine’s is really tough,” McCanna said. “We need to sneak up on that guy.” Top Harbor has been sharp after lengthy rests since his career began with a win... ...

Cowboy Mike, Alexander-bred Trio in Bertrando

By DRF.com and Los Alamitos Publicity CYPRESS, Calif. (June 20, 2024) — There has already been a major bet associated with Cowboy Mike’s appearance in Saturday’s $100,000 Bertrando Stakes for California-bred milers on the opening day of the Los Alamitos summer meeting. Earlier this week, Cowboy Mike was supplemented to the Golden State Series of stakes for statebreds for $25,000, a prerequisite for a start in the Bertrando. The expensive fee makes the 4-year-old Cowboy Mike eligible for the statewide series for the remainder of his career. “We took a gamble,” trainer Bob Baffert said. The idea for the supplemental nomination was discussed in 2023 by Baffert and owner-breeder Connie Pageler. The presence of The Chosen Vron in many of the leading stakes for statebreds last year prevented the investment. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Big City Lights One of Four in Triple Bend

By Bloodhorse.com ARCADIA, Calif. (May 29, 2024) – State-bred stakes usually give horses an option to obtain black type while ducking tougher competition they might encounter in graded stakes. The talented California-bred sprinter The Chosen Vron  has turned that scenario upside down for the June 1 Triple Bend Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita, to the potential benefit of fellow Cal-bred Big City Lights . It has already worked once. After winning two stakes, Big City Lights finished second to The Chosen Vron in four consecutive Cal-bred stakes, the only losses of his career. So trainer Richard Mandella and owner William Peeples skipped the Jan. 13 California Cup Sprint with Big City Lights, leaving that victory to The Chosen Vron. Big City Lights instead faced open company in an allowance optional claimer and the Feb. 10 Palos Verdes Stakes (G3), acing both tests. The Chosen Vron and Big City Lights appeared together in the entries for the May 25 Thor’s Echo Stakes for Cal-breds, but Mandella and Peeples may have found a better path yet again. They... ...

By DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. (May 23, 2024) – The winning streak began with a come-from-behind victory in a $50,000 claimer in a turf sprint at Santa Anita on a Friday in early March. Nearly three months later, the 7-year-old California-bred gelding Johnny Podres is a multiple stakes winner, has won three consecutive starts, and is possibly on the verge of his first graded stakes win in Sunday’s Grade 3 Daytona Stakes at about 6 1/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course at Santa Anita. It will not be easy. The race is full of contenders. DRF.com on Saturday’s Cal-bred Stakes

By DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. (May 23, 2024) – There is no red carpet for the star of the show Saturday at Santa Anita, but there certainly is for the main supporting player. Seems it should be the other way around. Millionaire gelding The Chosen Vron probably will win the $100,000 Thor’s Echo anyway, but he must overcome an unwelcome obstacle – post position – in the race 3 sprint that is the first of five Cal-bred stakes on Saturday. A half-hour later in race 4, Kings River Knight is lone speed in the $100,000 Crystal Water at a mile on turf. Kings River Knight figures to be long gone and win the Crystal Water a second time. The Chosen Vron and Kings River Knight, 6-year-old geldings, enter their races as perceived low-odds standouts. From a betting perspective, the Thor’s Echo and Crystal Water offer less appeal than three stakes later. From a sporting perspective, who doesn’t love The Chosen Vron? A winner of 16 stakes, The Chosen Vron is stuck... ...
