HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 28, 2017) — California Chrome cooled out off in his right knee, trainer Art Sherman said Saturday night, which likely explains why he ran so poorly in his career finale at Gulfstream Park in the Pegasus World Cup.
Sherman said it did not appear to be a major injury at this point, saying there was fluid in the joint, “but it’s not like he’s dead lame,” Sherman said. Unless California chrome’s condition unexpectedly worsens, he will go to Kentuck on Sunday morning and be examined in Lexington by Dr. Larry Bramlage, according to Sherman.
California Chrome is scheduled to go to stud at Taylor Made, and the flight to Kentucky was originally scheduled with that in mind.
Sherman said if the injury is a chip, it likely will be removed arthroscopically. He said he did not think it was anything worse than that, but said California Chrome is clearly off in that joint.
