NEWMARKET, Great Britain (Apr. 28, 2015) — Reigning Horse of the Year California Chrome, who is currently being prepared for a European campaign, will not run in the Group 1 Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes May 16.
According to an article in the Racing Post, trainer Rae Guest – who is handling the preparation of the dual classic winner while California Chrome is in England – indicated that it has taken a long time for the colt to recover from the Dubai trip.
“He’s not going to run,” Guest said. “He took a long time to get over the trip which is understandable. It was a long way from California to Dubai, then racing and coming here, it’s a lot for a horse to take in in one go.”
“We’re happy with him now but it would have been a rush to get him ready for the Lockinge.”
California Chrome will now be readied for the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 17.
