LEXINGTON, Ky. (Mar. 10, 2016) — The top spots in the 2016 season’s initial Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings feature a trio of U.S.-trained horses, headed by 2014 Horse of the Year California Chrome .
Off season-opening victories in the San Pasqual Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita Park and a handicap at Meydan, where he spotted his rivals 15 pounds, California Chrome is tied for first in the rankings that consider races from Jan. 1-March 6.
ANGST: Another Shining Victory for California Chrome
California Chrome, who is being pointed by trainer Art Sherman to the Dubai World Cup (UAE-I), where he finished second last year, is tied in the initial rating with Dubai City of Gold Sponsored by Skycargo (UAE-II) winner Postponed and Duramente, winner of the Nakayama Kinen (Jpn-II). All three have earned a 121 ranking.
Just behind the top three is Frosted, who opened his 4-year-old season for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin with a five-length score in the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2 Sponsored by EGA (gr. II); and undefeated champion 2-year-old filly Songbird, who has opened her 3-year-old campaign for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer with dominating wins in the Las Virgenes (gr. II) and Santa Ysabel (gr. III) stakes at Santa Anita.
