CYPRESS, Calif. (Sept. 3, 2016) — Trainer Art Sherman sent California Chrome back out to breeze at Los Alamitos for the first time since his impressive Aug. 20 TVG Pacific Classic (gr. I) victory, and the 2014 Horse of the Year turned in a steady work Sept. 3.
Los Al clockers caught the 5-year-old son of Lucky Pulpit in :48 4/5 after a first quarter in :24 3/5, and timed him through the gallop out in 1:02 4/5.
“I thought it was a very good maintenance work; he just was breezing,” Sherman said. “He went in :48 and change, the gallop out was strong. We’re right on schedule.”
Next on California Chrome’s march to the Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I) is the Oct. 1 Awesome Again (gr. I) at Santa Anita Park, a Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” event. California Chrome has surpassed expectations in each of his five starts in 2016 for an undefeated season that includes a victory in the March 26 Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline (UAE-I).
“Next week we’ll go an easy five-eighths with him, and by the time the Awesome Again comes around, we’ll be ready for that,” Sherman said.
