ASCOT, Great Britain (June 11, 2015) — Horse of the Year California Chrome worked out under jockey William Buick Thursday morning at Newmarket ahead of his upcoming tilt in the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes June 17 at Royal Ascot.
According to a report in the Racing Post, the California-bred worked out as his U.S. connections looked on. Trainer Art Sherman and co-owner Steve Coburn arrived in England earlier this week.
California Chrome will likely be a big price in the 10-furlong contest, with many bookmakers listing the colt at 10-1 odds. A field of 10 or 11 is expected for the Prince of Wales’s, with such top challengers such as The Grey Gatsby, Free Eagle, and Western Hymn expected to run.
Co-owner Coburn is looking forward to the Prince of Wales’s and racing at Royal Ascot, which he hopes includes meeting the Queen.
“I understand the Queen’s a Chromie and I’m looking forward to meeting her, although I’ll have to get a top hat instead of this Stetson,” Coburn told the Post. “I’ve also been told I have to wear shoes and I haven’t done that since I got out of the US army in 1979.”
