DEL MAR, Calif. (Sept. 4, 2023) – Overcoming a lengthy pre-race maintenance delay and an awkward break from the inside post, odds-on favorite Crazy Hot proved best nonetheless in Sunday’s $125,000 Generous Portion Stakes for Golden State Series-eligible 2-year-old fillies at Del Mar.
Crazy Hot is by Goldencents, out of the Rockport Harbor mare Harbor Mist, was bred by Thomas Bachman, is owned by Edward Brown & Cory Thabit and is trained by Jeff Bonde. She has two wins in four starts, earnings of $134,850 and was coming off a third in the Aug. 6 CTBA Stakes.
“You hate drawing the one hole and this race was a disaster,” said Bonde. “For whatever reason they delayed it and with young 2-year-olds some of them tolerate it, some of them don’t, so you’re going to see a new side of them when that occurs. He’s (jockey Mike Smith) a great speed rider and he did a good job.”
Crazy Hot went off as the 4-5 favorite, ran six furlongs in 1:11.93 and won by 1 1/4 lengths. Prancingthruparis was second and Fly a Fantasy was third in a field reduced to six with Unified A. P. scratched at the gate.
“She ducked; she went for the gap,” said Smith. “I kind of had a feeling she might try that; I had my rein short on one side for it. She’s fast through. Really fast. She’s a nice filly. And despite the trouble, she got it done.”
Racing will resume for the meet’s final weekend on Friday with first post at 3 p.m.
