CYPRESS, Calif. (Sept. 6, 2021) — The $75,000 E.B. Johnston – for older horses bred or sired in California – will be run on Sunday, Sept. 12 at the Los Angeles County Fair meet Los Alamitos, and the one-mile race attracted 11 nominees.
Desmond Doss, who won the Bertrando Stakes during the Summer Thoroughbred Festival earlier this year, and Galilean, who is undefeated in three starts at Los Alamitos, top the nominees to the Johnston.
Owned by breeder Nick Alexander and trained by Steve Miyadi, Desmond Doss has won five of 15 and earned $289,591. The 5-year-old is a son of Grazen and the Malek mare Malley Girl.
Trained by John Sadler for a partnership that includes West Point Thoroughbreds, Galilean will be seeking his first win of 2021 and returning to dirt after disappointing as the favorite in a turf race last month at Del Mar.
A son of Uncle Mo and the El Prado mare Fresia, the 5-year-old has earned all of his Los Alamitos victories in stakes. He captured the Barretts Juvenile – in his career debut – and the King Glorious in 2018 and the Soi Phet last year.
The other nominees to the Johnston are Atomic Drop, Big Fish, Big Story, Club Cal, Eustace, Loud Loud Music, Loud Mouth, Peaceful Transfer and Tom’s Surprise, who was second in the Bertrando June 26, beaten a half-length when 27-1.
Entries for the Johnston will be drawn Thursday, Sept. 9. The 10-day LACF season begins Friday, Sept. 10 and continues through Sunday, Sept. 26.
