ARCADIA, Calif. (June 9, 2021) — Fashionably Fast, a hard-hitting California-bred son of Lucky Pulpit, seeks the sixth stakes win in a 23-race career this Saturday in the $100,000 Thor’s Echo Stakes at Santa Anita.
Also entered are Colt Fiction, bred by Robert Mitchell; Whooping Jay, bred by Reddam Racing; Jamming Eddy, bred by Reddam Racing; Brickyard Ride, bred by Alfred Pais and Loud Mouth, bred by Tommy Town Thoroughbreds.
The Thor’s Echo for four-year-olds and up is one in the Golden State Series for horses bred or sired in California.
“He worked this morning (four furlongs in 47.80) and as long as everything goes well, the game plan is to run,” said Dean Pederson, who trains Fashionably Fast for John Harris, his breeder and owner along with Per Antonsen and John Nicoletti.
A six-year-old chestnut gelding, Fashionably Fast has compiled an 8-4-5 record from 22 starts, earning $590,661.
“He’s paid the way for himself and about five others in the shed row,” said Pederson, who will give jockey Tiago Pereira a leg up on Fashionably Fast for the 23rd time in 24 races.
“At this point in the ball game, there’s not a lot that goes into the thought process with this horse,” Pederson said. “We just try to have him ready to go, and when he leaves the gate, he takes care of the rest.
“He’s had some time between races (Fashionably Fast was third in an overnight race in his most recent start on April 24), because these horses run hard and let’s face it, at his age he’s starting to get a little mileage on him.
“Not that he’s been over-raced by any means, but he’s getting a little older and sometimes it takes a little more time to bounce back. This time he’ll have seven weeks between races and in the past, he’s always run well with that kind of spacing.”
Fashionably Fast worked five furlongs May 30 in a bullet 59.20. “He went well; he had some company in front of him,” Pederson said. “It was a breeze to let him know it was time to go back to work.”
