CYPRESS, Calif. (Sept. 7, 2021) — The Los Angeles County Fair meet at Los Alamitos will begin Friday, Sept. 10.
The 10-day season will continue through Sunday, Sept. 26 with racing conducted on a Friday-Sunday basis the first two weeks (Sept. 10-12 and 17-19) and Thursday-Sunday the final week (Sept. 23-26). Post time will be 1 p.m.
The meet will include five stakes worth a combined $400,000, including a pair of races for 2-year-olds at 6 ½ furlongs.
Colts and geldings will compete in the $75,000 Capote Saturday, Sept. 18, one week before fillies get together in the $75,000 Capote.
The first weekend of the meet – Saturday, Sept. 11 and Sunday, Sept. 12 – will feature the $75,000 Beverly J. Lewis Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at six furlongs and the $75,000 E.B. Johnston Stakes for older horses bred or sired in California. The one-mile Johnston will be run the 12th while the Lewis will be offered the day before.
The stakes schedule is completed by the $100,000 Los Alamitos Special, which will be run for the third time Sunday, Sept. 19. The race is for 3-year-olds & up at 1 1/16 miles. The Special had been run previously (2018-2019) at 1 ¼ miles.
Track gates – including Burgart’s and Vessels Club – will open at 9:30 a.m. General parking is free with grandstand admission $3 ($2 for seniors).
The wagering menu includes the Pick Six – with the traditional 70%-30% split – a pair of Pick 4’s – races 2-5 and the final four races – as well as the popular Players’ Pick 5 – a 50-cent minimum wager with a reduced 14% takeout rate which is offered on the first five races.
In addition to the Capote Stakes, the Sept. 18th program will feature a live money handicapping contest with two seats available to the 2022 National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas.
