Lonesome Stew Leads Grazen-sired Trifecta

ARCADIA, Calif. (Mar. 30, 2025) – Lonesome Stew headed a Nick Alexander-bred and Grazen-sired trifecta while winning Sunday’s $100,000 Sensational Star Stakes for Golden State Series-eligibles at Santa Anita.

Lonesome Stew is out of the Maria’s Mon mare Stash, is owned by Linear Bannasch and trained by Mark Glatt. He went last to first through the stretch under jockey Antonio Fresu.

“That wasn’t the plan,” Fresu said of his tardy beginning. “He usually shows some speed, but today he was acting up a little bit inside the gate and I didn’t leave the gate very well so I just tried to bide my time and improvise a little bit and get him comfortable going down the hill.

“Once the horse was nice and settled, I put him on the outside to not get him in trouble and he just flew home. Amazing job done by Mark and his team.”

Glatt claimed Lonesome Stew for $32,000 out of his last-place debut Sept. 1, 2022 from Alexander. He had only four starts in 2023 and only two last year. Since returning from a 10-month layoff last Oct. 31, Lonesome Stew has won four of five.

“He’s a Grazen and I look at all the Grazens,” explained Glatt. “Basically, just took a shot. A 2-year-old at the time by Grazen, I know the Grazens get better with age. It took us some time. Had to give him a couple of layoffs, but he’s always shown some talent, especially when he came back from the first layoff. Linear was real patient with him and afforded us the time he needed to get right and I’m glad she was rewarded today.”

Lonesome Stew has five wins in 10 starts, earnings of $189,480 and was coming off a win in a Feb. 15 optional claimer.

At odds of 9-2, Lonesome Stew ran the about 6 ½ furlongs down the hillside turf course in 1:11.55 and won by a half-length over 8-5 favorite Tom Horn, with Lovesick Blues third in the field of seven.
