ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 13, 2021)–A vastly improved 5-year-old horse by Boisterous, trainer Steve Knapp’s Loud Mouth heads a field of 11 older horses going six furlongs in Saturday’s $150,000 Don Valpredo California Cup Sprint, one of five stakes on Cal Cup Day at Santa Anita.

Named for prominent CTBA board member and longtime California owner/breeder Donald Valpredo, the California Cup Sprint is part of the CTBA’s lucrative Golden State Series for eligible California-bred or sired horses four and up.  Credited with helping conceive the inaugural Cal Cup Sprint in 1990, Valpredo has served on the CHRB, the boards of the Breeders’ Cup and TOC, and is a current member of The Jockey Club.

Ridden back by Abel Cedillo on Oct. 25, Loud Mouth reversed a 20 ¾ length one mile allowance defeat Sept. 26 by drawing off to a four length win going 6 ½ furlongs.  Dismissed at 13-1 in the seven furlong Cary Grant Stakes at Del Mar Nov. 22, Loud Mouth rallied wide turning for home and won going away by three quarters of a length in his first stakes triumph.

Bred by Tommy Town Thoroughbreds and owned by Thomsen Racing, LLC, Loud Mouth, who is out of the Tale of the Cat mare Drama Cat, was claimed for $40,000 15 starts back on July 20, 2019 and has an overall mark of 22-6-0-2.  With Cedillo back aboard, Loud Mouth brings two consecutive 91 Beyer Speed ratings to the Valpredo party and merits top billing.

A winner of six consecutive races, four of them stakes, from July 27, 2019 through March 1, 2020, Harris Farms homebred Fashionably Fast has been idle since well beaten in the Grade I Bing Crosby Stakes Aug. 1 at Del Mar.  Managed adroitly by trainer Dean Pederson, Fashionably Fast got some deserved time off and there’s no question that if he’s ready, he’ll extremely tough to beat on Saturday.

Owned in partnership with Harris Farms by Per Antonsen and John Nicoletti, this 6-year-old gelding by Lucky Pulpit, Fall Fashion, by Forestry, brings an enviable mark of 18-7-4-2 and will be ridden for the 18th time by Tiago Pereira.

Although he had his six game winning streak snapped by multiple Grade I winner McKinzie in running second two starts back in the Grade II, seven furlong Triple Bend Stakes here June 7, Fashionably Fast nonetheless earned a career-best 95 Beyer, a further indication of his considerable talent.

Lightly raced, trainer Mike Puype’s Tigre Di Slugo comes off his best ever performance on Nov. 27 and rates an upset chance with Joel Rosario riding back.  Off a bit slow at 7-2 in the six furlong allowance, Rosario orchestrated an impressive run from off the pace, as the 6-year-old Smiling Tiger gelding won going away by 1 ¼ lengths.  Bred by Premier Thoroughbreds and owned by Slugo Racing, Tiger Racing Stable, LLC and Puype, Tigre Di Slugo will make his second start off an eight-month freshening and has three wins from five career starts to his credit.
