ALBANY, Calif. (Apr. 8, 2016) — Trainer Tim McCanna picked up the 2,000th victory of his career April 8 at Golden Gate Fields, when Whiskey Prince captured the third race.

Ridden by jockey Frank Alvarado, Whiskey Prince made a three-wide bid from just off the pace to take the $12,500 conditioned claiming event for 3-year-olds and older by a length.

“It was a lot of work, in a lot of ways,” the 54-year-old McCanna said of the accomplishment.

A native of Spokane, Wash., McCanna has successfully competed in Northern California and in the Northwest. He established a full-time Northern California presence in 2012 after previously splitting the year between the Golden State and Washington.

“I raised three kids (in Washington),” McCanna said. “I always had it in my mind to come to (Northern California). I just wanted to get that done. Once they were raised, I came down here. I’m going to keep most of my horses here. I’ll have a few (horses at Emerald Downs) for owners in Seattle, but I’m pretty much here to stay.”

A member of the Washington Racing Hall of Fame, McCanna has won 10 training titles at Emerald Downs and was the leading trainer at Playfair Race Course from 1982-1995.

McCanna has trained one graded stakes winner, Gins Majesty, who captured the 2006 Ballerina (Can-III) at Hastings Racecourse. His other top pupils include Alexandersrun, Poker Brad, Queenledo, and Willie the Cat.
