DEL MAR, Calif. (Nov. 3, 2017) — One Fast Broad, patiently ridden by veteran Corey Nakatani after a slow start, rallied from last place to win the $200,000 Golden State Juvenile Fillies at Del Mar Friday, the first of two days of the 2017 Breeders’ Cup World Championships.
One Fast Broad, a daughter of Decarchy bred by owned by Ruis Racing and trained by Mick Ruis, overhauled 2-1 favored Spiced Perfection in the final sixteenth to score by a length in 1:24.78 for the seven furlongs.
“Corey (Nakatani) never panicked,” said Ruis. “He waited with her and rode a great race. We knew she could run on dirt. She’s got a brother that won half a million on turf, so we started her there. I’m going to give her about 60 days off now and bring her back as a really good 3-year-old, and I do believe she’ll run on.”
Show It N Moe It was third, a length behind the runner-up and almost four lengths in front of fourth-place Ismelucky in the field of nine California-bred two-year-old fillies.
The winner went postward at 4-1 and returned $10.40, $4.60 and $3.60 after her second triumph in four starts, raising her earnings to $172,000. Spiced Perfection, who was piloted by Joe Talamo, paid $3.60 and $3, while Show It N Moe It returned $5 to show.
