BONSALL, Calif. (May 1, 2020) — Reddam Racing’s grade 1 winner Pavel was retired May 1 and will stand at Ocean Breeze Ranch in Bonsall, Calif. The owners also announced that their grade 1 winner Square Eddie has been pensioned from stud duty.
Trained by Doug O’Neill, Pavel won the 2018 Stephen Foster Handicap (G1) at Churchill Downs. The son of Creative Cause won first time out going 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:15.20 at Santa Anita Park as a 3-year-old. He went on to win the Smarty Jones Stakes (G3) at Parx Racing and then placed third in the Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park, beaten 1 3/4 lengths by winner Diversify.
At 4, Pavel finished fourth to Thunder Snow in the Dubai World Cup Sponsored By Emirates Airline (G1) before winning the Stephen Foster. In his next start, he was the runner-up in the $1 Million TVG Pacific Classic Stakes (G1) at Del Mar. At 5, he again finished fourth to Thunder Snow in the Dubai World Cup, beaten by three lengths. He last raced in the Pacific Classic in August and was retired with $2,090,351 in earnings.
Reddam Racing manager Dennis O’Neill purchased Pavel after the colt was an RNA on a final bid of $80,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
“He was a gorgeous yearling that we purchased to pinhook as a 2-year-old. He was good size, very athletic, and very correct,” O’Neill said. “He should be a great addition to California breeding. The week before the OBS sale, I told Zillah and Paul (Reddam) that this was a really special horse.”
The Reddams’ decided to scratch from the Ocala Breeders’ Sale and race the colt.
“He was a hard-knocking horse who ran his heart out in each of his races,” Paul Reddam said. “He took us to some amazing places and will always be one of my favorite horses.”
Bred in Kentucky by Brereton Jones and WinStar Farm out of the Maria’s Mon mare Mons Venus, Pavel is a half brother to grade 2 winner Caracortado.
In addition to Pavel, Mrazek , a son of Square Eddie , will also stand at Ocean Breeze.
In his best performance, Mrazek placed second in the 2016 Lazaro Barrera Stakes (G3), beaten a neck. The winner of the Thor’s Echo Handicap and the 2015 Graduation Stakes was retired with $312,000 in earnings.
Square Eddie was pensioned from stud duty at the age of 14.
“Square Eddie will always hold a special place in my heart,” Zillah Reddam said. “He will live a long and pampered life at Ocean Breeze Ranch. We are so proud of him and so thankful we were able to own him.”
Square Eddie was retired with 300 foals, 17 black-type winners, and progeny earnings of more than $16 million. His leading progeny include grade 1 winner Ralis and grade 3 winners Eddie Haskell and Listing.
Pavel will stand for the rest of 2020 and 2021 for a stud fee of $5,000. Breeders can book additional mares at a reduced fee of $3,000. Mrazek will stand for $2,500.
